I read Obama's inauguration speech today. Quite long and occasionally touching. I know Obama is probably a pretty busy man... you know, running the world and what-not.. but I think it would be pretty neat if an incoming President would write his own speech for once.
On the SMH site, they had a link to "Great Presidential Speeches" and I couldn't be arsed looking through all of them but I noticed that George W's was listed. I skim read some of it expecting to find alot of racial slurs (mostly unintentional), poorly constructed sentences.. you know, stuff that proves to the world that the guy has about the same command of the English Language that a 10 year old retarded kid does.
Anyway, to my suprise, it was a well constructed speech.. obviously written for him. It did tend to lean towards protecting the "rights" and "freedoms" of America, so I wouldn't for a second doubt that The Don Rumsfield or Dick Cheaney had had some sort of feedback into its construction..
Anyways, my point is that if you aren't writing your own speech.. you pretty much aren't saying anything that you believe in and you are regurgitating cliched stuff that the 27 year old Jon Favreau had written for you. It would be great to see some real passion come out in one of these speeches just so that the plebs out there could see that someone in a position of power really gave a shit.
That'd be nice.
Oh and if THE Jon Favreau (the dude who wrote and directed Swingers, Iron Man and Made) wrote Obama's speech it would probably go something like this.
America, I stand here before you today to accept the priveledges and responsibilities that this great nation has bestowed upon me.
America. You are so fucking money you don't even know it.
